On August 18, 2025, Enugu State marked a significant turning point in its transport saga as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah unveiled the Enugu State Transport Management System—a bold initiative blending modern design with heritage revival to reimagine city travel.
The unveiling introduced five ultra-modern bus terminals strategically located at Holy Ghost, Nsukka, Abakpa, and Garki, forming the backbone of a renewed, efficient transport infrastructure. Alongside this, a fresh fleet of 100 eco-friendly CNG-powered buses entered service, part of an ambitious two-hundred-strong rollout aimed at boosting clean, reliable transit across the state.
In a powerful gesture toward sustainable development and local enterprise, ANAMMCO Vehicle Company stepped in to refurbish 50 decommissioned buses that had once served as the Coal City Shuttle Service. These were transformed from scrap to state-of-the-art vehicles thanks to a technical partnership with China’s Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd.
Benneth Ejindu, ANAMMCO’s Chief of Operations, emphasized the dual impact of the project—offering cost savings through restoration while spotlighting homegrown engineering skill: “These buses, which initially arrived at ANAMMCO in scrap condition, were restored to state-of-the-art operational standards.” Uche Okeke, the company’s Executive Director for Corporate Services, added that ANAMMCO also donated two new pickup trucks to support the Ministry of Transport in overseeing operations and ensuring a smooth passenger experience.
Governor Mbah’s vision for this project extends beyond transportation. It’s part of a larger blueprint to drive Enugu’s economic rise, targeting a $30 billion economy powered by industrialization, infrastructure ramp-up, job creation, and youth empowerment.
Representatives from the state government were on hand to hail the initiative’s forward-looking spirit. Mrs. Iphie Ugonabo, Special Adviser on Transport to the Governor, framed the scheme as a clear example of engaging indigenous firms for rapid, impactful outcomes, reaffirming Enugu’s commitment to supporting home-based businesses and forging sustainable partnerships.
Overall, this initiative signals more than just a facelift for public transit—it’s a statement of intent. By blending high-tech solutions, local capacity building, and environmental responsibility, Enugu is laying the groundwork for a leaner, greener, and more connected future.
